EDUCATIONAL CATTLE PRODUCER EVENTS
Sunrise Veterinary Services
NEXT SCHEDULED MEETINGS:
Please RSVP for yourself and others on your farm to attend at least 2 days before each meeting by calling 608-768-7297 so we can plan for food. Jill thanks you!
Wed., Feb. 26, 2020: Choose to attend this producer meeting at either 12 Noon or at 6PM at the Reedsburg VFW Post 1916, 200 Veterans Drive. This will be a great opportunity for both Dairy and Beef producers. We will be featuring Dr. Douglas Wagner and Dr. Curt Vliestra as our speakers. Our topics will be Pinkeye, as well as respiratory issues & vaccines. Dr. Wagner will be covering updated Pinkeye information: the hows, whys, wheres as well as other valuable insights. Pinkeye is our arch nemesis, and we need everyone to understand what this fight involves. Even if you were at the last Pinkeye meeting 3 yrs ago, this disease is changing so fast that coming again will still definitely be worth your while as there's a lot of new information out there. Dr. Curt will address the issue of respiratory vaccines for beef and dairy. Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim & Newport Lab Vaccines & Sunrise Vet Services. Please call Sunrise at 768-7297 to place your RSVP for yourself and others on your farm to attend.

Jan. 15, 2020: Together with Parnell Laboratories (makers of estroPLAN and GONAbreed), Sunrise sponsored a Cattle Producer lunch meeting. Or speaker, Dr. Paul Fricke, focused on the latest in fertility treatments and options as well as management updates. This meeting was held on the East side of Reedsburg at the Reedsburg VFW Post 1916, 200 Veterans Drive. We were very fortunate to have Dr. Paul Fricke speaking as he’s very well known and respected in the dairy industry. Dr. Fricke was one of the people who helped develop Ovsynch and has been instrumental in promoting the 30/30 concept of a 30% pregnancy rate with 30,000 lbs of milk production.
Dr. Fricke zeroed in on "The High Fertility Cycle in Dairy Cattle”. It was an excellent talk about dairy cattle, breeding programs & protocols, and body condition scoring as it relates to fertility! He wants everyone to know that cows who lose weight after freshening have very poor conception rates (<20%), cows who maintain weight have average conception rates (25-30%), but cows who gain weight have much higher conception rates (+60%). Paul Fricke described this as a “Eureka” moment for them when they saw this relationship between body condition score (BCS) and fertility.
When we are on your farms, let’s start looking at BCS & your cows. Dr. Fricke would like to have cows freshen at a BCS of 2.75 and then have them gain weight to achieve a BCS of 3.0 at one month fresh.
Another point from the meeting is that you don’t need to change your protocol, but change which cows you are breeding and what you are breeding with. When you have a fat fresh cow, what should you do? We suggest taking good care of her, but when it comes to breeding her, consider high fertility beef bulls. Do you want to keep a family line of cows that calve in fat and who have lots of problems after freshening? Now, if you have a cow who comes in with minimal problems at a BCS of 2.75, never misses a beat, and is in heat at 68 DIM. Breed that cow with high quality dairy bull semen!
One more point from the meeting is regarding the number of heifers on a farm & what to breed them with. We harp on this a lot, but do you need all those heifers you’re raising? Can you take 15-25% & breed them for beef? You bet you can! Just make sure you’re choosing the correct cow to breed with that beef bull semen. Certainly animals who’ve been less than stellar in growth performance, or if they are out of less than average cows should be bred with beef for sure. (Dr. John recommends red angus, but then he’s definitely biased!) Above average calves need to be bred with better semen or sexed semen so that you can continue to improve your herd.
Tuesday, March 19, 2019 Together with Zoetis, Sunrise had a 12:30 luncheon meeting at the Reedsburg VFW on 6 Factors of Dairy Financial Success. Our speaker, Dr. Matt Boyl from Zoetis, reviewed six specific dairy production factors that drive success on a dairy as measured by net farm income according to Compeer. We had approximately 30 dairy producers attend this meeting. Dr. Boyl showed us that you don't have to be a bigger farm to be profitable, but instead reminded everyone about how the little things add up to be huge things in the dairy business and can make all the difference when it comes to keeping your farm in the black. Most of the things discussed were items that many producers were already aware of, but Dr. Boyl did an awesome job driving home the fact that those little things need to matter each and every day and why they are things you have to stay on top of ALL THE TIME! We had many clients remarking that this would make them take a second look at how they are making decisions and handling the calves and cattle on their farms. This was a great meeting for our dairy producers!

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019 Together with Boehringer Ingleheim, Sunrise held a dinner meeting on Tues. Feb. 19th at 6pm at the VFW that featured our own Dr. John Laukant discussing calving. Dr. John acted out, much to our amusement, the birthing process and the different calving positions that we can be presented with. We also had BI's Dr. Kurt Vliestra who discussed the importance and significance of the 5 "C's" of calf care post calving!!! The 5 "C's" are in regards to Colostrum, Calories, Cleanliness, Comfort, and Consistency. This was a great meeting for both beef producers as well as dairy folks and we had a full house with 77 attending. Thank you to Dr. Kurt, Krysty, and Boehringer Ingleheim for supporting our client education programs! |

Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at both 12:00 & 6:00 PM
Our meeting was on Injections. Ever wonder how injections that you give affect the animal and the quality of the carcasses you are producing? We learned about how various injection routes & various products influence what happens below the skin's surface. We learned the importance of following label directions on injections, what happens when you don't, and how that impacts the value of a carcass. This meeting was at the KC Hall (Knight of Columbus Hall) just 1/2 block North of Sunrise Veterinary Services. Advanced reservations were necessary. Thank you to Zoetis for sponsoring this meeting with Sunrise!!!

Our educational event that we planned for you was at the Reedsburg VFW hall. The main speaker, Dr. Douglas Wagner, addressed the topic of PinkEye. There was an awful lot of Pinkeye in the area last year and it had a devastating effect on our cattle’s production and potential sale-ability. We also be talked about parasites/treatment-prevention and fly/ fly control and a way to handle those problems. We learned that LongRange is a good way to deworm cattle and that it pays for itself and more when it comes to the increased weight gain from animals treated with it. The meeting was again offered at two separate times to choose from; 11:30AM or 6PM. We sent out postcards with more info and just needed you to RSVP for food information. If you are not on our mailing list for our producer meetings but would like to be, please call Sunrise and ask to be added to that list.
