  • Sugar Substitutes, such as xylitol used in sugar-free candies and chewing gums, can cause liver damage and low blood sugar in dogs.
 
  • Liquid Potpourri can not only badly burn a dog or cat who gets into the hot oils but can also cause ulcers in the mouth, throat and GI tract from the chemicals.​
  • Medications, whether human or pet medication, could kill your pet if ingested. Beware of child-proof containers as your pet can crush the container and then get into the medication.

  • Antifreeze can and will cause death if ingested. It causes crystals to form in the pet’s kidneys leading to kidney failure. Sometimes people add this to toilet water to winterize a cabin and then the pet drinks out of the toilet and becomes poisoned.

  • Aspirin can be used with caution in low doses in dogs but should never ever be given to cats.​

  • Mouse/Rat Poisen is of course potentially fatal to any animal.

  • All Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers (NSAIDs) should never be given to any pet as they can cause liver and/or kidney failure.

  • Lilies can cause kidney damage to cats who consume even a very small amount of the plant.

  • Polyurethane Glue if swallowed can cause a hard concrete-like mass in your dog’s stomach that may need to be surgically removed.

  • Bread Dough if consumed can also expand in your pet’s stomach and cause problems.

  • Onions and Garlic contain compounds that cause GI irritation and can negatively affect your pet’s red blood cells leading to anemia. Even cooked onions and garlic can cause problems with your pet.

  • Grapes and Raisins can cause GI problems as well as kidney failure in dogs who consume even a small amount.

  • Chocolate, especially dark and Baker’s Chocolate, can lead to vomiting and kidney failure.

  • Cocoa Mulch which is also made from the cocoa bean can also lead to kidney failure.

  • Fatty Foods, such as turkey/chicken carcasses, skin, and drippings can lead to vomiting and pancreatitis which can cause death if serious enough.

  • Pennies contain zinc which when swallowed gets absorbed by your pet’s body and can cause anemia and kidney problems. Pennies minted after 1982 are particularly dangerous as they contain 99.2% zinc.

  • Macadamia Nuts can cause a wide range of symptoms including GI upset, severe weakness, vomiting and diarrhea.

  • Pine-Oil Cleaners contain phenol that can cause liver damage in cats who lap up some of the cleaner off the floor or who lick the cleaner off their paws.

  • Alcoholic Beverages can cause acute poisoning in dogs.

  • Coffee/Caffeine (All Forms) Dogs and cats are much more sensitive to caffeine and more than a couple laps of coffee can lead to death.

  • Diet Pills contain caffeine so coffee above

  • Chewing on Electrical Cords can lead to burns in the mouth or even electrocution.

  • Avocado Pits are poisonous to both dogs and cats.

  • Animal Toxins such as toads, insects, spiders, and snakes can potentially be fatal.

  • Blue-Green Algae in Ponds puts all of us in grave danger.

  • Citronella Candles can be burned around pets but never allow a dog to chew on them.

  • Compost Piles can be extremely toxic to dogs. Cats generally avoid them.

  • Fertilizers are very poisonous.

  • Swimming Pool Treatments such as Chlorine and other chemicals can be extremely toxic.

  • Fly or Slug Baits containing Metaldehyde, Malrin, or Marlin or deadly poisonous to dogs. (For example: Golden Malrin Fly Bait)
